Climber, 18, injured after 12-metre fall in Austria

Two 18-year-old German women were climbing in Austria on Saturday, October 17.

They were on the Südverschneidung route on the Rote Flüh, a mountain in the Tannheim Valley near the German border.

At the fifth pitch, the lead climber lost track of the route and could not find the next belay point.

A handhold broke as she tried to climb back, and she fell about 12 metres.

Her partner and the safety rope stopped the fall, but she suffered injuries to her torso and could not continue.

A rescue helicopter lifted both climbers to safety, and the injured woman was taken to Reutte District Hospital for medical care.
