Suspect in Sukoharjo Shop Arson Was Former Terrorism Convict

Police in Sukoharjo, Central Java, say the shop arson suspect was a former terrorism convict.

Police chief Roy Siahaan said AS was involved in a terrorism case in Jakarta in 2016, but officials have not detailed that case.

Authorities are examining his background and whether it is linked to the burning of Mi dan Babi Tepi Sawah, a noodle and pork shop.

AS is the only person named as a suspect so far, and police are checking for possible accomplices.

Police say he resisted arrest on Monday night with a samurai sword, injuring an officer; officers fired rubber bullets and hit AS twice in the body.

The investigation is continuing, and police have not said whether more suspects will be named.
