Toronto inquest resumes after mother alleges officers pushed daughter

A Toronto coroner’s inquest into Regis Korchinski-Paquet’s death is set to resume Friday.

Korchinski-Paquet, 29, fell from the 24th-floor balcony of her apartment on May 27, 2020, while police officers were inside.

Her mother, Claudette Beals, testified that she saw officers push her daughter toward the balcony.

Officers who testified earlier said Korchinski-Paquet moved quickly toward the balcony after being asked to speak with a paramedic.

Beals’s allegation led lawyers to raise concerns because the officers had not been given a chance to respond, and the coroner paused proceedings to consider how the evidence should be heard fairly.

The inquest has heard Korchinski-Paquet had epilepsy, experienced two seizures that day and could have erratic behaviour after seizures; its scope includes how first responders are trained and informed about epilepsy.

A police watchdog had cleared the officers of wrongdoing, and Beals is expected to continue testifying as the inquest resumes.
