Canada's inflation rate rose to 3.1% in September as fuel prices climbed

Statistics Canada said annual inflation reached 3.1% in September, up from 3% in August.

The increase was driven mainly by gasoline, whose prices were 27.8% higher than a year earlier.

The Middle East war continued to push up fuel prices, and fuel oil costs also surged, affecting households that heat with oil, especially in Atlantic Canada.

Without gasoline, prices rose 2.2% over the year, showing how much fuel contributed to the overall increase.

Grocery prices rose 1.7% year over year, their smallest increase since May 2024, although they were still 33% higher than in September 2020.

Inflation varied across Canadian cities, but Statistics Canada cautioned that local figures may fluctuate widely because they rely on small samples.

Bloomberg reported that measures of underlying price pressures eased, even as the overall rate climbed.
