Gum stem-cell trial reports improvement in more than half of Type 1 diabetes patients

Scientists and doctors in Shanghai and Guangzhou tested gum-tissue stem cells as a treatment for Type 1 diabetes.

The cells, called gingival mesenchymal stem cells, were taken from tissue in the mouth.

The treatment was studied in a randomised phase 1 clinical trial.

More than half of those who received it showed some degree of improvement.

One participant was able to stop taking insulin completely.

The results were published in the medical journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy on September 30.

The findings are encouraging, but the trial results do not say what further testing or treatment plans will follow.
