Itapeva suspends urban school classes amid diarrhoea outbreak
Itapeva suspended urban municipal school classes from Nov.
4 to 6 while water tanks at schools are cleaned.
The city in Brazil’s São Paulo state took the measure after cases of acute diarrhoeal disease were reported.
Rural classes are continuing because those schools use water from wells.
Water company Sabesp said it increased tanker deliveries from 300,000 to 450,000 litres a day, prioritising schools, health centres and other essential services.
It also said it is checking water quality more often and strengthening disinfection.
Reported clinic visits fell to 591 in the week of Oct.
25 to 31, down from 626 the week before.
Residents are advised to use safe water and wash food carefully; anyone with diarrhoea, vomiting or abdominal pain should seek medical care.
