São José goalkeeper, 14, dies after car crash; family donates his organs

Miguel Meneses, a 14-year-old goalkeeper for São José, died after a car crash in São José dos Campos, Brazil.

He was taken to the city's Municipal Hospital, where doctors confirmed brain death on Tuesday.

His family chose to donate his organs, hoping they could help patients waiting for transplants.

Miguel played for São José's under-15 team and had also taken part in the city's Atleta Cidadão sports program.

The donation could give other patients a chance at life, while offering his family a way to carry on his generosity.

The city declared three days of official mourning, and São José players paid tribute to him before a match against Corinthians.

The hospital planned an applause corridor before organ procurement, scheduled for Wednesday evening with hospital staff and a regional organ-procurement organization.
