Hyundai opens Pune plant as part of $15.5 billion India investment

Hyundai Motor Group has opened a new factory in Pune, western India, as it marks 30 years in the country.

The plant will initially make 170,000 vehicles a year, with capacity planned to rise to 320,000 by 2030.

Group chairman Euisun Chung said Hyundai plans to invest about $15.5 billion in India over seven years, in production, research, local parts and other areas.

The new factory will make the Venue SUV for Indian buyers and export markets, while Hyundai plans to shift its Chennai plant toward electric vehicle production.

India is a fast-growing car market, but Hyundai’s local sales fell 2.3% in the 2025 financial year, leaving it fourth behind Indian manufacturers Mahindra and Tata.

Hyundai also has a small share of India’s electric vehicle registrations, so it needs to grow sales and exports as production capacity expands.

The company says it will work with Indian firms on electric vehicles and batteries, while the plant’s planned capacity increases are due by 2028 and 2030.
