Deep Purple postpones two German shows after Ian Gillan is hospitalized

Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan was hospitalized after a medical emergency, the band said on Saturday.

The 81-year-old singer was due to perform with the British rock band in Leipzig and Hamburg, Germany over the weekend.

Deep Purple postponed both concerts, but did not disclose details of Gillan’s condition or say when he might leave hospital.

Gillan is best known as the voice of songs including “Smoke on the Water” and has performed with Deep Purple across several periods since joining in 1969.

The band is working to reschedule both shows, and tickets already bought will remain valid for the new dates.

Deep Purple’s tour is scheduled to continue through the rest of the year, with further dates planned in Europe, the United Kingdom, South America and Mexico.
