Philippe Jaenada wins 2026 Goncourt Prize for murder mystery novel

Philippe Jaenada won the 2026 Goncourt Prize for his novel L’Inconnue du quai de Javel.

The 62-year-old French writer received six votes from the Goncourt Academy, against three for fellow finalist Sylvain Prudhomme.

The novel revisits the 1949 murder of Louise Cansot, a young woman found dead beside the Seine in Paris.

Cansot had arrived in the capital alone at 16 and became a sought-after model for Montparnasse painters.

Police identified four suspects but never solved the case, which the novel investigates.

The prize brings major attention to the book, as the Goncourt is one of France’s best-known literary awards and is linked to strong sales.

Jaenada has now won on his first appearance in the final, after being shortlisted four times before.
