Mexico urges G20 to address global tensions and protect vulnerable people

Mexico’s foreign minister Roberto Velasco presented five priorities at a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

The meeting, chaired by Marco Rubio, focused on geopolitical tensions and their effects beyond the places where conflicts begin.

Velasco said these tensions can disrupt trade and raise living costs, hitting people with fewer resources hardest.

Mexico called for diplomacy and the UN to help resolve conflicts peacefully, alongside reliable delivery and funding of humanitarian aid.

Its proposals also include strengthening supply chains, addressing poverty and inequality, and protecting vulnerable groups such as children and women.

The aim is to reduce the burden on people with the least resources while supporting lasting peace and a more resilient global economy.

Velasco was also due to hold bilateral meetings with other foreign ministers during the G20 gathering.
