Chinese Banks Bring Back Large-Deposit Products, but Supply Is Tight
Chinese banks have restarted large-denomination deposit products after many long-term offers disappeared.
In November 2025, China’s six largest state-owned banks had all withdrawn five-year products.
Current rates differ: state-owned banks offer up to 1.60%, while some foreign banks offer more, including 1.92% for a three-year product at Taiwan’s Bank SinoPac.
Many long-term products are already sold out, and some bank branches say customers must wait for more allocation.
Banks are bringing the products back as older, higher-rate deposits mature and they seek stable long-term funding, while balancing the risk that customers move their money elsewhere.
Banks’ profit margins remain under pressure, despite a small increase in the sector’s net interest margin in the second quarter of 2026.
A proposed rule could lower the purchase minimum to 200,000 yuan and allow transfers through approved channels, but it is not yet final.
Chinese banks have brought back large-deposit certificates after a period when long-term products were widely withdrawn, but supply is limited.
Rates reported by the article include up to 1.60% at state-owned banks, 1.79% for a five-year product at China Minsheng Bank and 1.92% for a three-year product at Bank of Taiwan.
Several banks’ apps showed medium- and long-term products sold out or with insufficient quota, and branch staff said customers may need to wait for more allocation.
Analysts said banks are restarting issuance to manage funding costs and the mismatch between long-term lending and shorter-term deposits.
The return of the products does not mean banks’ net interest margin pressure has ended; the reported commercial-bank margin was 1.41% in the second quarter of 2026.
