Senate leader suggests Juan Gabriel for posthumous Belisario Domínguez Medal
Higinio Martínez proposed considering Juan Gabriel for a posthumous medal during a news conference in Mexico.
The Belisario Domínguez Medal is a state honor for people recognized for contributions to their country or humanity.
Martínez said Juan Gabriel’s music reached people across social groups and had brought audiences together.
He cited the singer’s broad appeal as a reason to consider him for the honor.
Martínez also named former minister and federal deputy Olga Sánchez Cordero and businessman Carlos Slim as possible candidates.
He urged the Senate to award medals left pending from 2024, 2025 and 2026 in a single session.

What people are saying
It should be considered, you know? At least I would propose that it be considered. Everyone in this country, so to speak, knows who Juan Gabriel is.
I think he is the only one who has now united chairos and fifís, rich and poor.
His music was used in this last World Cup, almost like an anthem for Mexicans, not only for the National Team.
The 2024, 2025 or 2026 medal cannot be more important. I think all three could be awarded in a single session, and with that we would catch up.
