Golkar lawmaker urges delay to Indonesia’s KPU selection panel

Golkar lawmaker urges delay to Indonesia’s KPU selection panel

Golkar lawmaker Ahmad Doli Kurnia opposes forming the KPU selection panel now.

The panel helps Indonesia’s president screen candidates for the country’s General Election Commission, whose commissioners serve from 2027 to 2032.

Parliament is still revising the 2017 election law, and Doli says candidates should be tested on the law they will have to apply.

He warns that selecting commissioners before the revision is complete could mean testing them on rules that may soon change.

Doli proposes changing the rule that requires the panel to form six months before commissioners’ terms end, or delaying the final selection stages until the revised law is ready.

Another lawmaker said the president had signed a decree forming the panel and that it was awaiting announcement, but Doli’s comments do not establish whether it has been formally announced.

The panel’s formation and the law revision remain unresolved, and no next step or timetable is confirmed here.
