Böhmermann clip draws complaints and truckers’ association demands apology

A clip in the October 2 episode of ZDF Magazin Royale shows Jan Böhmermann being run over by a truck while riding a blue Simson moped.

Many viewers and critics see the scene as a reference to AfD politician Ulrich Siegmund, who used a similar moped during his campaign in Saxony-Anhalt.

The ZDF says the vehicle appeared throughout the show and was not meant to refer to a specific person.

The ZDF received complaints in the low hundreds, mainly about the scene of the moped rider being hit and run over again.

The truckers’ association says the clip unfairly portrays truck drivers as violent and has demanded a public explanation and an apology from the broadcaster.

The association also called the clip especially tasteless because four young moped riders died in a Brandenburg crash days before the show aired.

It is considering legal action, and the clip remains available in the ZDF media library.
