Serrat says Spain’s housing crisis has fueled public protests

Joan Manuel Serrat spoke about Spain’s political and social climate before receiving the 2026 Leteo Prize in León.

He called the 29 November general election a test for candidates and voters and said it was a good time for people to express their views.

Serrat pointed to housing costs, the cost of living and pressure on public services as major concerns.

He said the housing problem had reached a breaking point and was driving repeated street protests.

The protests come amid wider public frustration, including teacher mobilisations over working conditions and cuts to public education.

Serrat said what is happening reflects years of people’s growing disillusionment and expressed respect for the protests.

The election is due on 29 November, giving voters a chance to voice their views at the ballot box.
