Webuild named preferred bidder for Zambia railway project

Webuild was named preferred bidder for a railway project in Zambia.

The roughly 517-kilometre railway is part of the Lobito Corridor project, and the section assigned to the bid would run from the Angolan border to Chingola in Zambia’s Copperbelt province.

The corridor is intended to improve trade links across southern Africa, including for critical minerals.

Once the railway is complete, freight journeys from the Copperbelt to international markets are expected to fall from 16 days to seven.

The project is expected to bring about $3 billion in economic benefits for Zambia and Angola.

Africa Finance Corporation is promoting and developing the project, working with the two governments on approvals and priorities.

The railway is moving toward implementation with support from international development partners, but no construction timetable is given.
