Netanyahu weighs crypto plan as Israel faces possible banking sanctions

Benjamin Netanyahu is considering a crypto-based system to help Israel cope with possible international banking sanctions.

He said he had asked advisers to prepare a plan that could route financial transactions around traditional banks.

Israel has not faced full restrictions on its banking system, though several countries have imposed measures against settlers, organizations and some Israeli officials, and targeted trade with settlements.

The Bank of Israel says cryptocurrency cannot bypass sanctions and urges the government to protect Israel’s economic ties with major trading partners.

Opposition leaders also criticized the idea, warning it could isolate the country and harm businesses.

Israel’s economy depends on global trade and investment, including a technology sector that uses banks to work with overseas customers.

Netanyahu said he would consider the central bank’s criticism, while Israel’s next election is scheduled for October 27.
