Tribunal awards former teenage waitress £13,048 after finding discrimination

An employment tribunal awarded Daniesha Charles £13,048 after finding she was discriminated against at work.

Charles was 15 when she worked part-time at the Royal Thurso Hotel in the Scottish Highlands in 2024.

The tribunal found discrimination based on age, sex, race and disability; Charles is Black British Caribbean and dyslexic.

The tribunal heard that a chef and the hotel’s general manager shouted and swore at her, including after she dropped an apple crumble.

The ruling addressed her treatment as the youngest and only Black female staff member among a mainly white British workforce.

The tribunal’s award is the compensation set out in its ruling.
