Hanwha Systems to develop cockpit-style ship control system
Hanwha Systems will develop a cockpit-style bridge system for future smart warships in South Korea.
The system is designed so two crew members can handle navigation, combat, propulsion and control from one space, rather than having larger crews perform those tasks in separate rooms.
The project, led by South Korea’s Defense Technology Promotion Research Institute, covers the system’s hardware and operating software and runs through 2030.
The integrated system will combine the ship’s bridge, combat, engine-control and unmanned systems, using technologies Hanwha Systems says it developed itself.
It is also planned to use AI to assess collision risks and help choose safer routes, while making controls digital and easier for crew to use.
Cockpit-style systems are currently held by only a few advanced countries, including the United States and Italy, and are seen as important for operating ships with fewer crew members.
The development aims to advance ship automation and unmanned operations as South Korea pursues its smart navy strategy.
Hanwha Systems won a South Korean defense technology agency contract to develop a cockpit-style integrated bridge system for smart warships.
The system is designed to let two crew members perform navigation, combat, propulsion and control functions together in one space.
The work includes building consoles and developing integrated operating software, and is scheduled to run through 2030.
The system will combine bridge, combat, engine-control and unmanned-system technologies developed by Hanwha Systems.
It is intended to support ship automation and future unmanned vessels, including through AI-based collision-risk assessment and route selection.
