Malou Oheix Wins Herbie Hancock Institute Jazz Vocal Competition in Paris

The Herbie Hancock Institute held its International Jazz Vocals Competition in Paris for the first time in the event’s 39-year history.

French singer Malou Oheix won first place and a $50,000 scholarship for her two-song performance.

Georgia Heers placed second and received $25,000, while Lucy-Anne Daniels took third and received $10,000.

The scholarships help pay for college-level jazz studies and specialized instruction, and more than $100,000 in scholarships and prizes was awarded.

The competition was open to singers aged 30 and under, and its organizers selected 11 semi-finalists from more than 200 applications.

The event also honored trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, while Herbie Hancock said the future of jazz is safe.
