Fontaines D.C.’s Fifth Album Turns New Wave Into a Dystopian Horror Show

Irish band Fontaines D.C. have made their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber.

It follows their fourth album, Romance, and stretches across a full record the uneasy shifts between calm and chaos heard in songs such as “Starburster.”

The album uses a New Wave sound to portray a dystopian 2020s.

Its lead single, “Marianne,” pairs carnival-like synths and strings with singer Grian Chatten’s promise to help someone disappear.

The music often turns romantic moments into threats, while songs such as “Happy for You” and “Tongue” move from restrained moods into bursts of anger or noise.

The review describes the album as bold but says it has no obvious pop hit or festival anthem.

The band’s follow-up to Romance sustains a dark, unsettling mood across the record.
