Malaysia to inspect Gardenia factory after food poisoning complaints

Malaysia’s Health Ministry is investigating complaints of alleged food poisoning after people consumed Gardenia products.

The complaints, which circulated on social media, mention Gardenia Original Classic White Bread and Twiggies Choc-A-Lot.

Gardenia Bakeries told the ministry that its internal investigation found no problems with production processes or food-safety controls, but the ministry said this does not establish what caused the reported symptoms.

Laboratory tests are still pending, and investigators have limited product traceability because batch numbers and expiry dates were incomplete.

The ministry plans follow-up inspections at Gardenia’s factory in Kuala Lumpur to check compliance with Malaysia’s Food Act 1983.

Enforcement action may follow if violations or safety risks are found; people with symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhoea are urged to seek medical care and notify their District Health Office.
