Bemotrizinol sunscreens reach US stores after FDA approval

Bemotrizinol sunscreens are reaching US store shelves after the FDA approved the ingredient in June.

The chemical, also called BEMT, has been used in Europe and other parts of the world.

It protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which can damage skin and contribute to skin cancer.

Before BEMT, US manufacturers had to combine multiple chemical ingredients to get that kind of protection; mineral sunscreens also provide it but can leave white streaks.

Studies found very little BEMT was absorbed through the skin, and the FDA review found no irritation or allergic reactions in the studies described.

The new option could suit people who avoid mineral formulas because of their appearance or feel, and products from Neutrogena and other makers are now becoming available.
