South Korea’s financial watchdog warns of hacking at major investment firms

South Korea’s financial watchdog chief said major investment firms had suffered hacking the previous day.

The warning came as cyberattacks had recently affected banks, savings banks, mutual finance groups and specialist lenders.

Investment firms and insurers had not previously reported breaches, but a personal data leak at Mirae Asset Life was reported on the 26th, followed by the investment-sector incident.

Lee Chan-jin said AI could make vulnerabilities easier to find and attacks more frequent.

He stressed that IT security protects customers’ money and information and supports trust in finance.

He urged financial firms to manage their technology assets and build stronger defences, and called on company boards to lead security improvements.
