Bill proposes renaming Volgograd and St Petersburg

Communist Party lawmaker Anzhelika Glazkova introduced a bill in Russia’s State Duma to rename Volgograd as Stalingrad and St Petersburg as Leningrad.

The proposal would require the cities to take those names within a year of the law taking effect.

Glazkova says the change would recognize the wartime history of the cities, including the Siege of Leningrad and the Battle of Stalingrad.

The bill would also require Russian hero cities to keep the names they had during the Second World War.

It proposes giving the State Duma a role in awarding hero-city status and setting rules for commemorations and symbols.

The proposal has been introduced, but no approval is reported, so the cities’ current names remain in place for now.
