Iveco truck chief calls for a common EU plan to electrify heavy trucks
Iveco Group truck chief Luca Sra says Europe lacks a shared plan to electrify heavy trucks.
His comments came in Turin as the company presented its acquisition by India's Tata Motors, opening a new phase for the group.
The EU requires heavy-vehicle makers to cut CO2 emissions by 45% for 2030-2034, but charging infrastructure and demand for electric trucks are developing at different speeds.
Sra says southern European countries lack clear roadmaps, while the transition is further along in Nordic countries.
He argues that electrification should be combined with alternative fuels and biogas, rather than relying on one solution.
He also says strong service networks and vehicle availability can help European truck makers compete with new rivals, including large Chinese companies.
Iveco Group truck business president Luca Sra called for a common European agenda and prepared charging infrastructure to support the electrification of heavy trucks.
The EU requires heavy-vehicle manufacturers to cut CO2 emissions by 45% for 2030-2034.
Sra said heavy-truck electrification is progressing more slowly than electrification in some commercial vehicles, especially those used for last-mile operations.
He said southern European countries including Italy, Spain and France lack a clear roadmap for the transition.
Sra also advocated combining electrification with alternative fuels and biogas.

What people are saying
From my point of view, we still lack a common agenda at the European level to drive this change. And, above all, we need the infrastructure to be ready.
Countries such as Italy, Spain or France still do not have a clear roadmap to support this transition; it is a complex issue.
A multi-fuel and multi-energy approach can contribute enormously to making the transition sustainable.
This solution must be combined with electrification.
