Ouagadougou neighbourhood hosts the Récréâtrales theatre festival

Bougsemtenga residents are hosting the Récréâtrales festival in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso.

The festival’s 14th edition runs from October 24 to 31, with performances staged in family courtyards and on the streets.

The neighbourhood has co-produced the festival since it began, and residents take part as performers and supporters.

Choreographer Djibril Ouattara worked with local women and young people on the opening performance, “Les Mouches.”

It explores how people respond to others, show care and make room for beauty.

A 550-metre alleyway becomes an urban stage, created by 68 technicians and artists from 12 countries.

The programme also includes readings, children’s performances, discussions, music and theatre, making art accessible to local residents and visitors.

Performances continue daily through October 31, from morning until the early hours.
