Jenni In Rome targets Golden Gift and a Golden Slipper place

Jenni In Rome will run in the $1 million Golden Gift at Rosehill on Saturday, hoping to earn a place in the Golden Slipper, a major race for two-year-old horses.

The filly is trained by Will Freedman and his father, Richard, and was bought in New Zealand for $130,000.

She finished third in her first race, the 1,000-metre Kirkham Plate, after briefly taking the lead before two other horses passed her late.

Freedman said she had improved since that run, though he is unsure how much more she can handle between races at this early stage of her career.

A top-two finish usually qualifies for the Golden Slipper, which is scheduled for March and has $5 million in prize money.

She faces a difficult draw in gate 13 of 14, with jockey Jason Collett booked to ride her; the Golden Gift winner receives $580,000 and the runner-up $190,000.

I thought she’d probably needed the run a little bit

She had a good blow after the race, and I feel like she’s really come on from that.

The plan was always to get his second up. Realistically, if you run in the top two in the Golden Gift, you usually qualify for the Slipper.
