China and Djibouti Agree to Cooperate on Red Sea Security

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Djibouti's Foreign Minister Omar in Beijing on October 21.

The two discussed ties between China and Djibouti, a country in the Horn of Africa near the Red Sea.

Wang said China wants to deepen practical cooperation, including by using a zero-tariff policy and Djibouti's location to support trade and transport links.

He also encouraged Chinese companies to invest in Djibouti and cited the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway as a basis for developing the surrounding area.

The ministers warned that conflict is spreading toward the Horn of Africa and Red Sea, where shipping routes face new threats.

They issued a joint statement on regional peace and shipping safety and signed a memorandum on cooperation under China's Global Security Initiative.

They said they would continue working together to support regional peace and stability.
