Yusril to discuss proposed change to Indonesia’s corruption definition
Indonesia’s National Economic Council has invited Yusril Ihza Mahendra to discuss changing the definition of corruption at a meeting scheduled for Monday.
The proposal was raised by council chair Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, and Yusril said he is willing to explain relevant laws and United Nations conventions.
The proposal is still at an early stage, with Yusril saying it has not yet addressed the details of how the definition would be adjusted to align with the UN Convention against Corruption.
Yusril was justice minister when Indonesia amended its main anti-corruption law in 2001, and he signed the convention in 2003.
Any change could affect how corruption is defined under Indonesian law, so Yusril says the rules’ history, strengths and weaknesses should be examined carefully.
The council meeting is the next step, but the sources do not say whether it will lead to a decision or a formal legal change.
Indonesia’s law, human rights and immigration minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra is scheduled to discuss a proposed change to the definition of corruption at a meeting on October 26.
The meeting is with the National Economic Council, led by Luhut Binsar Panjaitan.
Yusril said he was willing to explain laws and United Nations conventions related to fighting corruption.
He said Luhut’s proposal was still broad and needed serious review, including in relation to the UN Convention against Corruption.
Yusril said any regulatory change should be considered carefully and with a full understanding of the rules’ origins.

What people are saying
I am willing to explain, if asked, so that we can clearly understand the background and history of the drafting of various laws and UN conventions related to the fight against corruption.
What has been put forward is only a broad outline; it has not gone into the details of the issue of the definition of corruption that is to be adjusted to UNCAC.
Everything must be examined and considered clearly. Both those who want to revise and those who want to maintain it must think wisely and carefully.
