Orix selects supermarket worker Sugawara with developmental sixth-round pick

Orix selected outfielder Daisho Sugawara with the sixth pick in its developmental draft on October 22.

Sugawara is 24 and works in the seafood section of the supermarket Sendai Ichiba.

His selection drew attention to his unusual workplace, where he has appeared in videos recommending fish and helping prepare food.

He previously played for the Kumamoto Golden Larks and graduated from Kanazawa Gakuin University.

At 188 centimetres tall and 95 kilograms, he is noted for his power as a hitter.

In Japan, a developmental pick is a route toward earning a place on a team's registered roster.

Sugawara hopes to earn that status and repay those who supported him.
