Dalton Smith to defend WBC title against Alberto Puello in Sheffield

Dalton Smith will defend his WBC light-welterweight title against Alberto Puello in Sheffield on Saturday.

The 29-year-old champion is unbeaten in 19 professional fights, with 14 wins by stoppage.

He returns to the ring after knocking out Subriel Matias in New York in January to become world champion.

Puello is a former champion seeking a third world title, and the 32-year-old from the Dominican Republic has lost only once in 26 fights.

Several boxing figures quoted expect Smith to win, often predicting a points decision, but they describe Puello as a clever and experienced southpaw.

A win would keep Smith’s Hillsborough dream alive: he has spoken of wanting to fight at Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium.

The fight is scheduled for Saturday at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
