Ladakh gets a high court bench in Leh

Ladakh now has a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Leh, inaugurated on Sunday by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.

The high court was established in 1928, and the court was renamed after Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019.

Difficult terrain and harsh winters have made reaching court hard for many people in the region.

The Leh bench is intended to bring hearings closer, but the chief justice said it will not by itself serve people in far-flung villages.

He urged wider use of technology and legal aid to reach people who still struggle to access justice.

The Supreme Court plans to hear Ladakh cases by video link on a single day once lawyers at the Leh bench have adequate video-conferencing facilities.
