Electric cars gain ground in Turkey as industry shifts toward EVs

Electric cars are becoming a bigger force in Turkey's auto market, with fully electric and extended-range models accounting for 121,079 sales from January to September 2026.

That was 19.3% of all car sales in the period, and their share rose to 23.7% in September.

Turkey's registered electric-car fleet reached 486,359 by September 2026, up 52.4% from a year earlier, though electric cars still made up just 2.68% of registered cars.

The distinction matters: sales show demand for new cars, while the registered fleet reflects vehicles accumulated over time.

DNV expects battery-electric cars to exceed 90% of passenger-car fleets by 2050 in markets stretching from Europe to China and Southeast Asia; it also expects Europe’s conventional-car fleet to fall from nearly 284 million today to about 77 million.

The shift matters for Turkey because Europe is its leading automotive export market, and the article says electric cars and charging technology will become increasingly important to the sector’s competitiveness.

Lower energy costs, more charging stations and local electric-car options are supporting demand in Turkey, while rising sales and investment are creating new competition and opportunities for the industry.
