Spain sells more olive oil than it produces as farm prices fall
Spain's olive oil marketing season ended with sales exceeding the season's production.
By September 30, the country had marketed more than 102% of the oil produced, with 175,744 tonnes remaining at mills.
Extra-virgin olive oil prices are about €3, roughly €1 below a year earlier, and COAG Jaén says this does not cover production costs.
The group's figures put total stocks at 356,914 tonnes, only 66,697 tonnes more than at the same point last year.
COAG Jaén argues that imports, especially during difficult months, affect the market, rather than a structural surplus of oil.
COAG is calling for a market-stabilising measure that would remove about 188,700 tonnes from the market.
It says the conditions to activate the measure are now in place, but no decision to do so is reported.
Spain has marketed more than 102% of the olive oil it produced, according to provisional figures cited by the Agriculture Ministry.
Total olive oil stocks stood at 356,914 tonnes on 30 September 2026.
COAG Jaén says extra virgin olive oil prices are around three euros, one euro below a year earlier and insufficient to cover production costs.
The organisation says September sales from mills remained high at 96,351.47 tonnes.
COAG Jaén has urged authorities to activate a market self-regulation measure to help stabilise prices.
