South Korea’s industrial production posts biggest rise in 15 years
South Korea’s industrial production rose 3% in September, its biggest monthly increase in 15 years and six months.
Semiconductor output climbed 19.2% to a record high, as demand for memory chips continued.
Car production jumped 39.9% after an August strike and summer holidays disrupted factory work, though it was only 4.7% above July’s level.
Retail sales rose 3.6% and equipment investment rose 5.3%, reversing declines in the previous month.
The rebound was uneven: manufacturing growth relied heavily on semiconductors, with output excluding chips barely rising over the three months to September.
Services production increased just 0.5%, and output fell in 41 of 72 manufacturing categories, showing that the recovery had not reached many industries.
South Korea’s overall industrial production rose 3.0% in September, its largest monthly increase since March 2011.
The rebound was led by semiconductor production, which increased 19.2%, and automobile production, which rose 39.9%.
Retail sales grew 3.6% and facility investment increased 5.3%, reversing declines in some measures in August.
Officials attributed the production gains to sustained memory-chip demand and the normalization of car-factory operations after strikes and concentrated summer holidays.
The report also showed that manufacturing growth remained heavily dependent on semiconductors.

What people are saying
Semiconductor production rose due to continued memory demand, and automobile production, which fell sharply last month, increased significantly as factory operations normalized after the strikes ended and the period of concentrated summer holidays passed.
