Cobolli retires injured against Berrettini, who advances to Vienna quarters

In an all-Italian match at the Vienna tennis tournament, Flavio Cobolli retired against Matteo Berrettini while trailing 5-2.

Cobolli stopped because of a problem with his left leg, which he said he had felt in an earlier match.

Berrettini advanced to the quarter-finals and will play Australia's Alex De Minaur.

The two players are longtime friends who grew up playing tennis in Rome, making this their first match against each other.

Cobolli said his tears reflected emotion, stress and disappointment, not pain, and that he plans to have medical tests.

His condition could affect his hopes of playing at the ATP Finals in Turin in less than a month.

He said he hopes to be fit for Paris, and will update people after the tests.

I felt something in the match the other night, but I wanted to try until the end. Today, though, I understood that continuing would have meant pushing too hard, and I had to stop.

Those tears were not from pain. They were emotion, perhaps a little stress and the disappointment of having to leave the court when I would have wanted only to stay there.

I’m really sorry for him. I’ve been through it many times, perhaps too many. That’s why I got emotional.

I hope it’s nothing too serious.
