Allies publicly back São Paulo governor Tarcísio after right-wing criticism

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas received public support from political allies on Saturday, as he faced criticism from hard-line supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

The backlash followed Flávio Bolsonaro’s defeat by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the presidential election.

Tarcísio had said the election was over and the country should look ahead, and later said he might run for president in 2030.

Some Bolsonaro supporters called Tarcísio a traitor, despite his campaigning for Flávio.

State lawmakers and officials, including the head of São Paulo’s public security department, posted messages praising the governor, while São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes and senator-elect Guilherme Derrite had not posted similar messages by Saturday.

The public backing comes as Brazil’s right reorganizes after the election defeat, but no next steps were reported.
