Yogi Adityanath demands apology ahead of Akhilesh Yadav’s Ayodhya visit

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath demanded an apology from those responsible for firing on Hindu volunteers known as karsevaks in Ayodhya in 1990.

He made the remarks at the Deepotsav festival in Ayodhya on Saturday, without naming Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.

Yadav plans to visit the Ram Temple with his family on December 12, along with the Hanuman Garhi temple.

It will be his first visit to the Ram Temple since its consecration in January 2024.

Adityanath said an apology should come before the visit to devotees and religious leaders affected by the events.

The firing took place when Yadav’s grandfather, Mulayam Singh Yadav, led the state government; the Samajwadi Party has said the government acted to maintain law and order.

The remarks highlight a political dispute over the temple and the 1990 events, while Yadav’s party says his visit is a matter of faith.
