Sitting or standing makes little difference for healthy men urinating
A small Colombian study compared sitting and standing while urinating in 52 men aged 18 to 39 who had no known urinary problems.
Each man tried both positions, with the order chosen at random.
The researchers found no clear difference in urine flow or amount between the two positions.
Sitting brought the strongest flow about three seconds sooner on average, but the researchers said this was probably not medically important.
That means healthy men can choose their preferred position based on comfort or practical reasons such as avoiding spills.
For men with an enlarged prostate, incomplete bladder emptying can raise the risk of urinary infections and bladder stones.
Earlier studies of these men reached different conclusions, so there is no clear recommendation for them.
A small randomized study found no meaningful difference in urine flow or volume when healthy young men urinated sitting or standing.
The study included 52 men aged 18 to 39 without known urological conditions.
Researchers said healthy men can choose the position they prefer.
The best position for men with an enlarged prostate remains unclear, with studies reporting conflicting results.
The Colombian study was published in Neurourology and Urodynamics.
