Hanwoo cow sells for record 98.64 million won at national contest

Dongwon Home Food bought the contest’s top Hanwoo cow for 98.64 million won at an auction in Eumseong, South Korea.

The sale was a record for the National Hanwoo Ability Evaluation Contest, which has been held since 1993 to assess cattle breeding and promote farmers’ incomes and Hanwoo’s value.

The cow won the president’s award and had a 1++A grade, which describes its meat quality and yield.

It weighed 548 kilograms after slaughter, and its auction price was 180,000 won per kilogram.

That rate was more than four times higher than the price per kilogram for two other cattle with the same grade sold at the event.

The contest judges meat quality as well as conditions such as farm environment and disease-control facilities.

Dongwon has bought the award-winning cow for 16 straight years, and plans to sell this one through its online wholesale market and retailers, restaurants and wholesalers across the country.
