Brazil plans public health program for women going through menopause
Brazil’s Health Minister, Alexandre Padilha, says he plans a menopause care program in the country’s public health system, the SUS.
It would cover women going through the menopause transition or already in menopause.
The ministry plans to invite researchers from Caism, a women’s health centre at Unicamp in São Paulo, to discuss medicines and care practices.
Padilha also visited a bone-density testing facility, which can help assess bone health; falling estrogen during menopause can reduce bone formation and raise the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
The proposed program is part of a broader reorganization of the SUS that Padilha says is expected to be implemented over the next four years.
The ministry has not yet set out the program’s details; it plans to discuss them with Caism researchers.

The proposed program would address care and access to medicines through Brazil’s Unified Health System, known as SUS.
Padilha said researchers from the University of Campinas’ women’s health centre would be invited to help shape the program.
The announcement came during his visit to the university in São Paulo on October 27.
