Digital Realty offers De Soto households $1,000 a year for 10 years

Digital Realty plans to build a data center in De Soto, Kansas, where it is offering each household $1,000 in utility and property tax credits every year for 10 years.

The offer is part of a $20 million community investment the company has pledged.

Digital Realty says the project will eventually cover 1,400 acres, starting with a 280-acre site.

The offer comes amid public opposition to data centers, with concerns about environmental effects, pressure on local resources and higher utility bills.

The company says the completed site is expected to create 250 permanent jobs for local suppliers and contractors, while construction will support thousands of jobs over time.

It also says the project will provide recurring tax revenue and other economic benefits.

The credits' distribution is still being finalized with the city.
