Jaishankar warns G20 of energy supply disruptions from sanctions and chokepoints
India’s foreign minister S. Jaishankar warned the G20 about disruptions to energy trade at a meeting in Atlanta.
He said sanctions and chokepoints were increasingly distorting global oil and gas markets.
The meeting took place as sanctions affected Iranian oil sales and energy supplies from West Asia were disrupted.
Jaishankar said the world’s energy crisis was driven less by production shortages than by unpredictability, high costs and difficulty accessing supplies.
He warned that these disruptions could affect low-income countries and have wider consequences because energy markets are interconnected.
India needs reliable LPG supplies for clean cooking, and Jaishankar said its critical minerals mission covers exploration through recycling.
He urged the G20 to keep energy markets open and predictable and to support finance, storage, small modular reactors, green hydrogen and biofuels.
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar warned G20 foreign ministers that energy-market disruptions from sanctions, obstacles and chokepoints were growing more frequent and complex.
Speaking at the meeting in Atlanta, he said deliberate attacks on energy trade and infrastructure were a calculated strategy to hold prices hostage.
He described the energy crisis as one of unpredictability, disruption, unaffordable costs and limited access, rather than a lack of production.
Jaishankar said the G20 should keep energy markets open and predictable and give low-income countries’ needs greater attention.
He also called for reliable LPG supplies for India and support for energy storage, small modular reactors, green hydrogen and biofuels.
