South Korean man jailed for stealing an electric scooter key

A court in Chuncheon sentenced a 68-year-old man to 18 months in prison for several crimes.

In August, he stole a key from an electric scooter parked outside a restaurant.

He also threatened city officials who were enforcing rules against illegal burning, holding a broken broom and a sickle.

In a separate incident, he broke into a building's storage room after smashing its door glass.

He denied stealing the key, saying his own motorcycle key had started the scooter by chance, but the judge rejected that claim.

The judge said his prior convictions and the fact that he offended less than a month after leaving prison for a violent crime were considered in the sentence.

Given the function and characteristics of the key, it is difficult to readily accept that the scooter started with a key that was not its key.

We determined the sentence taking into account his prior punishment for several crimes and the fact that he committed the offences less than a month after being released from prison after serving a term for a violent crime.
