Malagón appears set to keep América’s starting goalkeeper role

Luis Ángel Malagón returned to goal for Club América after about seven months out with an Achilles tendon injury.

He played the full match against Monterrey, which ended 1-1, and made a key save.

Coach Guillermo Almada had told Rodolfo Cota that Malagón would start before the Monterrey game.

Cota had filled in during Malagón’s absence, and Almada praised his response; Fernando Tapia is also part of the goalkeeper competition.

The plan appears to give Malagón the starting role rather than rotate goalkeepers each match, though América has not officially confirmed it.

The match against León is the next test of whether Malagón keeps his place as the team approaches the decisive stage of the Apertura 2026 season.
