Brazil reallocates R$5.2 billion for benefits and health care
Brazil’s Planning and Budget Ministry authorized R$5.166 billion in extra budget credit on October 28 for federal programs and services.
The largest share, R$4.726 billion, will support payments of the BPC disability benefit and invalidity pensions.
The BPC is a monthly benefit for low-income older people and people with disabilities who cannot support themselves; it is currently set at one minimum wage.
Another R$387.6 million will go to medicines provided through Brazil’s public health system, the SUS.
The money will be freed by canceling existing budget allocations to other federal bodies and programs, rather than by adding new funds to the budget.
The credit also covers other federal expenses, including maritime military training and local sustainable-development projects.
Brazil’s Ministry of Planning and Budget authorized a supplementary credit of about R$5.166 billion for spending by various executive branch bodies.
The largest allocation, R$4.726 billion, is for the BPC disability benefit and the Renda Mensal Vitalícia benefit for people with disabilities.
R$387.6 million is allocated to pharmaceutical assistance through the Unified Health System, including the purchase and distribution of medicines.
The credit will be funded by canceling existing budget allocations across federal bodies and programs.
