Meta oversight board flags recurring election moderation errors in Brazil

Meta’s Oversight Board warned of repeated election moderation errors in Brazil.

The board said the company’s decisions have sometimes applied its rules too loosely and sometimes too strictly.

Meta mistakenly disabled President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign ad account after its systems wrongly flagged an ad about a government program as potentially fraudulent.

The company acknowledged a technical fault and told Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court that a separate global incident stopped some post views from being counted on October 7.

Meta said that incident affected users worldwide and did not disproportionately affect accounts linked to left-wing parties.

The board called for clearer, more consistent enforcement and stronger protection for political expression, after the mistakes prompted claims from Lula supporters that Meta was interfering in the election.

The board’s statement urges the company to improve its internal procedures, but does not set out a timetable for changes.

We have repeatedly warned that, during elections and periods of heightened political tension, failures in Meta’s content moderation often appear in two ways: over-enforcement of rules, which suppresses political expression, and under-enforcement, which harms election integrity.
