Spain's regulated electricity bill hits a four-year high in October

A typical household on Spain's regulated tariff faced an electricity bill of more than €80 in October, the highest in four years.

The estimate assumes a home with 4.4 kilowatts of contracted power and a set monthly pattern of electricity use.

The bill was 8% higher than in September and 29% above October a year earlier.

The main driver was the cost of energy, which rose to about €42 for the month, from about €30 a year earlier.

Spain's wholesale electricity price averaged €165 per megawatt hour in October, as higher gas prices and geopolitical uncertainty added pressure to energy markets.

Since 2024, the regulated tariff has been linked to both daily wholesale prices and a basket of futures prices; these account for 45% and 55% of its price, respectively.

The October bill remained below the record €123 paid by a similar household in March 2022, and the sources give no further forecast.
